KC Tech Job Postings - Required Skills
Exploring a snapshot of technology job postings over a 12-month period, we can see some important patterns of skills desired by Kansas City employers. Looking from the start of May 2024 to the start of May 2025, at just over 17,000 jobs, we can aggregate job postings across the tech job landscape to see what skills - both technical and durable skills - are most in demand for our region.
Technical Skills in Demand
Viewing all tech jobs together, the top technical skill is SQL.
16.6% of the 17K tech job postings list SQL as a desired skill.
Only 3.6% of tech job postings asked for some variation of Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning skills.
SQL is most prominent among Business Intelligence jobs, but also for Software Developers and Computer/IS Managers.

Durable Skills in Demand
Turning to durable skills for the same job postings, communication is the most stated ‘soft’ skill.
63.5% of the 17K tech job postings list communication as a desired skill.
Communication or Cooperative/Team Player skills top the list for all tech job categories.

Agreement on Durable Skills - Fragmentation on Technical Skills
When we view durable skills from job postings next to technical skills required, we see greater agreement on durable skills across a year’s worth of tech job postings. The top durable skills have a much higher percentage of prevalence than technical skills expressed by the job market.
Communication is the top durable skill for Computer/IS Managers (70.1%), Computer User Support Specialists (66.1%) and Network and Computer Systems Admins (58.5%).
The same jobs show a variety of technical skills in different order and prevalence across job postings.
